Less Difficult But Still Not Easy. James A. Ibers,
Dept. of Chemistry, Northwestern Univ., Evanston, IL 60208-3113.
Determinations of crystal structures of small molecules and
extended structures are far easier than in years gone by, but they may still be
fraught with problems and pitfalls. Worse yet, they may provide no information
of use to the chemist or they may provide deceptive information. This lecture
will present a little history for those under 40 and then concentrate on some
recent examples of problems and pitfalls in structure determinations of metal
chalcogenide molecular and solid-state systems.
