A Crystallographic and Computational Examination of Helical Aromatic Compounds and their Precursors. Rachel Smith, David A. Grossie, William A. Feld, Dept. of Chemistry, Wright State Univ., Dayton, Ohio 45435.

Helical aromatic molecules have been known for many years, however the synthesis of these compounds is very restricted and does not lend itself to derivaterization. Within this generalized family of compounds, we have an interest in a simplified synthesis of functionalized helical NLO chromophores and their characterization. Herein, we describe the structures of a series of precursors to a functionalized helical molecule suitable adaptation as an NLO chromophore.

The precursors have been examined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and molecular mechanics in an attempt to examine the helical nature of the product.
