The ACA recognizes distinguished achievement in the field of crystallography to both mature and early career crystallographers through the presentation of various annual awards.
Committee Appointment
The committees for the Warren, Fankuchen, Patterson, and Buerger Awards are chosen and appointed by the ACA president by March 1 of the year proceeding the year in which each award is given.
Award committees should be composed of four members. Committee members should have been members for the ACA for at least 10 years, have previously served the ACA in some capacity (committee membership, SIG office, program or local chairperson). No one shall serve on more than one committee for a major award (Warren, Fankuchen, Patterson or Buerger) in a four year period.
Selection Process
The committee chairperson is responsible for preparing a call for nominations identifying the members of the awards committee and publishing the announcement in the first newsletter following the appointment of the committee. The committee members should also solicit nominations by direct correspondence. The chairperson of the committee collects all nominations and circulates them for review by the entire committee. The chairperson requests a ranking from each committee member of the candidates deemed qualified for the award. No committee member shall accept nomination for the award.
The committee chairperson notifies the ACA president and secretary of the identity of the awardee. The committee chairperson draws upon the nominating material to prepare:
1. A concise statement of the basis for the award
2. A brief citation (200 words) for use by the ACA president at the awards ceremony
3. An extended one or two page announcement of the award including a biographical sketch of the awardee and summary of accomplishments that are the basis for the award.
Notification and Publication
The ACA president notifies the awardee and discusses plans for the presentation of the award and the recipient's delivery of a lecture at the annual meeting and any other responsibilities of the recipient associated with the award in question.
The secretary should prepare press releases on the award to be published in the ACA Newsletter, sent to the Program Chairperson, and distributed to Physics Today, C & E News, and other publications deemed suitable. The secretary should secure material for the press release from the chairperson of the awards committee (or files in the ACA office). The secretary should request a recent photograph of the awardee and give him/her the opportunity to provide additional information for use in preparing the press release or additional publications or organizations that should be notified of the award.
