Members of SCANZ and the wider crystallographic community both locally and overseas will be greatly saddened to learn of the passing this morning of Emeritus Professor Hans Freeman.
He had been critically ill over the past few weeks, passed away November 9, in the presence of his wife Edith and his children, Maeva and Philip
Hans was principally responsible for the establishment of structural biology as a discipline in Australia and remained an active researcher up to his very recent illness. Among his many roles in the crystallographic community, Hans was the inaugural president of SCA (now SCANZ) and also Chairman of the International Program Committee for the very successful IUCr Congress held in Perth in 1987. He also played a leading role in various aspects of Australian involvement in synchrotron science. He was awarded the 2007 Australian Academy of Science Craig Medal.
A memorial service will be held at the University of Sydney later this
year.
