The images were captured with a Polaroid camera attached to a Leica microscope. The magnification was 10X. They were then transferred to Image Pro Plus, a hi-gauss filter was applied and contrast and brightness were adjusted to obtain the results.

Description of Azobenzene & Menthol - Melted Before Mixing

The image shows the morphology formed on cooling a binary physical mixture of azobenzene and menthol at the eutectic composition from above the eutectic melting point. The mixture was heated on a glass slide with both components placed next to each other in an oven at more than 60º C. Menthol, having a lower melting point than azobenzene, converted into a liquid first. Azobenzene then melted into the liquid phase of menthol. The mixture was then taken out of the oven and cooled. The image was captured after cooling at ambient conditions for ~ 5 minutes.
