  Infinitely Coupled Magnet

Ivan Bernal

Description of Image:

(2005)  Modified packing drawings of a 3-dimensional cyanide-bridged bimetallic assembly

The drawings, which show the propagation of the network along a, b, and c axes of the orthorhombic cell (15.65 x 15.29 x 50.91Å) are from a 2005 paper by M.K. Saha, M.C. Morón, F. Palacio, and I. Bernal, Inorg. Chem. 2005, 44, 1354-1361. The crystal structure is of [{(323)Ni}3 {FeIII(CN6}2]n x 12nH2O, where 323 = N,N’-bis(3-aminopropyl) ethylenediamine. (The 323 ligand, terminal cyanides and water molecules were omitted for clarity). It is the first example of a 3-D organometallic infinitely coupled magnetic substance, and I consider the packing to have artistic merit.
