Materials Committee Report 2006During the Materials SIG meeting in Orlando Claudia Rawn (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) was nominated for Chair for 2006 and was subsequently elected. An amendment to our constitution was also passed which eliminates the secretary position, and establishes that the activities of this SIG shall be administered by an Executive Committee of three officers elected by members of the SIG. The officers of the Executive Committee shall be Chairperson, Chairperson-Elect and Past-Chairperson. Planning for the sessions that the Materials SIG would like to sponsor and co-sponsor at the 2006 meeting in Hawaii was started during SIG meeting in Orlando. The culmination of this planning resulted in the Materials SIG solely organizing a half day session 05.01 Non-Ambient Crystallography and jointly organizing six half-day sessions: 13.01 Crystalline Materials for Storage and Containment (with Small Molecule SIG), 13.03 PDF Analysis of Industrially Relevant Materials (with Industrial and Powder SIGs), 13.05 Difficult Organics/Organometallic Structures (with Service SIG), 13.09 Time-Dependent Investigations (with Neutron SIG) 13.12 Metal-Organic Hybrids- Crystal Engineering (with Small Molecule and Powder SIGs), and 13.13 Exploring Structures from the Near Neighbor to the Nanometer Scale Using Pair Distribution Function Analysis and Small Angle Scattering (with Powder and Small Angle Scattering SIGs). The Materials SIG would like to thank Lachlan Cranwick, Past-Chairperson, for representing them at the program planning meeting for 2006. Lachlan worked hard and used his organizational skills to ensure that many of the sessions that were of interest to the Materials SIG came to fruition. At the SIG meeting held in Honolulu, we discussed candidates for SIG Chair-elect for the Fall 2006 election process. A list of potential candidates for the SIG Chair-elect was drafted. In addition we discussed the sessions that we would be interested in organizing for the 2007 ACA meeting in Salt Lake City. It has been noted that over recent years that the attendees of the Materials, Powder, and Neutron Scattering SIGs are often the same and we support the proposition that the three SIGs meet together. This would help to avoid a lower attendance in any one SIG meeting when the meetings are scheduled concurrently. We have also found it effective over the last several years co-sponsoring sessions with other SIGs and joint meetings will aid in the planning of these sessions.
