Neutron SIG Report 2007Following the 2006 Honolulu meeting, the discussions held at the Neutron SIG meeting led to supporting the Transactions Session Diffuse Scattering and the regular session Energy Storage and Conversion at the 2007 Salt Lake City Conference. Conference PlanningMembers of the Neutron SIG have been very active already in making preplanning arrangements for the 2008 Knoxville Conference, for instance working to organize the on-the-ground details for the mixers, tours of the SNS and volunteers for the conference, and will continue to be active in the local site committee this year. Young PeopleOne topic that has been discussed has been the lack of poster contributions in Neutron and other non-Biomolecular SIGS. The intention will be to encourage more poster contributions to the sessions that the Neutron SIG sponsors for 2008 and also to encourage more student and young scientist participation in these sessions, so that a candidate for the Etter Awards can be identified. Cross-SponsorshipWhile cross-sponsored sessions are more difficult to organize support for, they can be very successful, as was witnessed by the Diffuse Scattering Transactions Session here at Salt Lake. Typically the Neutron SIG co-sponsors with Materials, and Powders and Small Molecules. We will do this again this year. However, for 2008 we hope to co-sponsor a session with the Synchrotron SIG on new instruments and developments from both radiations. There is frequently little mixing between Neutron and Synchrotron scientists, so we aim to have interleved talks and joint chairs for the session, since the divide between the two groups seems somewhat unnecessary. BoothsThe SNS booth here at ACA 2007 was a very good idea. I will attempt to entice the Canadian Neutron Beam Lab to have a more general presence (I am the only attendee) at ACA 2008, including investigating renting a booth for that venue.
