Dr. Luis G. Roldan
1925 – 2009
Dr. Luis G. Roldan of Greer, South Carolina, passed away on Sunday evening in his home, (February 1) succumbing to advanced Alzheimer's disease. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years - Carmen, their four children - José, Luis, Mary & Carlos, and three grandchildren.
He was born in Garafía, Spain on the Canary Islands in 1925 and raised in Seville, Spain, where he obtained his doctorate in science degree at the Universidad de Sevilla in 1957 in Chemistry & Crystallography.
He worked in the research field, first in the UK with British Rayon and then with Allied Chemical in Morristown, NJ, and lastly for JP Stevens, where he worked from 1968-1986 beginning in Garfield NJ and concluding at the Greenville SC research & development facility.
After retiring from JP Stevens, he worked for the US government's National Institute of Standards and Technology, certifying laboratories for asbestos testing. He also worked as a professor and dean at the Universidade da Beira Interior in Portugal and also as adjunct professor at the North Carolina State University.
He published over 40 articles in scientific journals. He was fluent in both Spanish & English with a working knowledge of French, German & Portuguese. He belonged to various scientific organizations and was considered an expert in his field of material science using X-Ray diffraction and electron microscopy.
His earthly remains have been donated to advance the knowledge of science and his ashes will be returned to the mother country. Any contributions in his memory may be sent to research Alzheimer's.
